Marine parts are matched to the exact engine, not just the model name. With the serial number we can pull the correct parts diagrams and quote the right parts the first time — which usually means a faster, more accurate estimate.
On a metal plate or sticker on the transom bracket (the clamp that mounts the motor to the boat). Mercury & Yamaha: plate on the swivel/clamp bracket. Honda & Suzuki: label on the clamp bracket. For sterndrives (e.g. MerCruiser), the engine serial tag is on the engine itself and the drive has its own serial on the upper housing.
